Directing Heavy Water

Michał Owerczuk served as director and editor for the short film Heavy Water, one of four installments in the Special Operations series produced for the Museum of the Second World War in Poland. The project combines live-action filming and actors with artificial intelligence tools to chronicle European resistance operations against Nazi forces.

Heavy Water tells the story of the mission by Norwegian commandos that halted the Nazi nuclear program. To craft the short, Owerczuk established his own local workflow along with a proprietary coloring and photo restoration filter.

Produced across winter and spring 2025, the four-part series spans 15 minutes and 400 shots, integrating tools such as Midjourney, OpenAI, Runway, and Stability AI into its live-action pipeline. The project also received a pre-premiere presentation at the Cannes Film Market with the backing of the Polish Film Institute.
