The Machine Cinema GenJam Directors Cup powered by OpenArt AI has officially launched, marking the first-ever AI Filmmaking World Championship. Bringing together 63 national teams, only 16 squads advanced to the knockout stage. Michał Owerczuk is captaining the qualifying Polish team, known as Team Eagles.

Prior to Poland’s knockout match, Owerczuk stepped in to assist the South Korean team during their match against Indonesia. The video hackathon challenged filmmakers to produce and upload a complete film in four hours. Required creative elements included Korean cuisine, a night-shift cook, and a cat, with bonus points for featuring a street-food vendor and a neon sign.
Drawing inspiration from his visits to South Korea and the nighttime atmosphere of Seoul, Owerczuk produced “OCTOPUSS,” a short dark anime meeting the brief. Team Eagles faces France next in the competition on July 15.
