More Than a Game Review

In a review published on culture portal WRITERAT, Maria Gawron examined the documentary film Więcej niż gra, which focuses on the Polish League of Legends community. Gawron noted that the production operates at a high level, illustrating how the game has evolved since its 2009 beginnings into a lifestyle for players and an integral part of their personal stories.

More Than a Game Review

The review emphasized that the film moves beyond individual matches to showcase the backstage world of esports and the intense emotions experienced by competitors, including the joy of winning and the sorrow of defeat. Gawron observed that the documentary uses team setbacks, such as G2 Esports’ loss at the World Championship, to demonstrate how failure teaches resilience, highlighting that true mastery requires hundreds of hours of dedication.

The production features reflections from prominent players, coaches, and commentators who share their own experiences. Featured figures include Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski and Oskar “Vander” Bogdan recalling their early milestone matches, such as KMT’s three-to-zero victory in the 2014 LCS, alongside former coach Fryderyk “Veggie” Kozioł, who spoke about meeting his wife through the game.

Reflecting on the viewing experience, Gawron recounted how historical competitive moments, from IEM Katowice in 2013 to the 2019 World Championship, brought forward deep emotions. She concluded by recommending that viewers watch and judge the documentary for themselves.
